First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church was originally known as Mount Tabor, organized by Rev. James Burriss in 1817 and located at what is now South Murray Avenue. The church moved to its current site in 1834 and named Anderson Baptist Church. The church was renamed First Baptist Church in 1892. The bell was added in 1892, and removed in 1976 when the old tower was razed.

Grace Episcopal Church

Grace Episcopal Church was established in 1851 as a mission church. The church today was built in 1904, after a fire destroyed the original sanctuary in 1901. The church remains greatly involved with the community.

St. John's Methodist Church

St. John's Methodist Church

St. John’s Methodist Church was the first church in Anderson, organized in 1828. A frame building was erected in 1858 and replaced by the present brick building in 1888. The church was named St. John’s in 1897.

Thompson Centennial United ME Church

Thompson Centennial United ME Church
209 W. Market St.
Organized in 1867, Thompson Centennial United ME Church is the second church in Anderson formed by African-Americans. Rev. Henry A. Mikell served as the first pastor. Mrs. Elizabeth Whitner donated logs to create the first church, but it was replaced by the present brick building in 1911.
